About URku & our philosophy

Welcome to URKU - A world of flavours, one Cacao bean.

URKU is a for-purpose business dedicated to showcasing premium Cacao and Chocolate.

We are trusted cacao and chocolate experts, specialised in curating unique experiences. From product development and curated experiences to knowledge generation: We meet you wherever you are in the cacao journey.

We focus on sourcing the finest Cacao directly from Ecuador, developing unique recipes and techniques, including our signature aged chocolate, and crafting exceptional sensory experiences for chocolate lovers.

While we develop the recipes and deeply understand the chocolate-making process, chocolate bars are crafted at origin.

We partner with farmers, local businesses and chocolatiers at origin, ensuring more value stays within the cacao-growing communities as well as supporting industry innovation in cacao-producing countries.

Our expertise lies in curation, sensory experiences, and ethical sourcing through sustainable practices.

Fun fact: Special Cacao harvests are featured in our limited edition collection— handcrafted experiences only for our Melbourne-based customers.

Our unique approach combines:

  • Single Origin Cacao Beans: We focus on selecting harvests of the Cacao Nacional variety.

  • Expert Curation: We blend traditional knowledge and practices with innovative insights and techniques.

  • Ethical & Direct Sourcing: We build direct relationships with farmers, going beyond standard certifications.

  • Sensory Experience Focus: We design tastings and pairings to deepen your appreciation of chocolate.

URKU was co-founded by Sebastian Alarcon Pinto, our CEO & Cacao Evaluator, and Carolina Contreras, our founder and sustainability lead. To learn more about them, you can read their story here :)

Sourcing, Ethics, & Sustainability

All our cacao is sourced directly from specific farmers, families and communities in Ecuador. Our trusted partners:

  • Herencia - A farmer-owned social enterprise gathering 800 small farmers, supporting ancestral traditions and biodynamic practices

  • Lua - A family-owned business with a cacao harvest that is influenced by the lunar phases and the entire ecosystem that surrounds it.

  • Kallari - A Kichwa Association dedicated to the production and commercialisation of Cacao Nacional. Kallari's harvest is based on traditional permaculture techniques, true to the essence of Amazonian fine aroma cacao.

Ethical and sustainable practices are core to URKU. We build direct, long-term relationships with our Ecuadorian cacao farmers, ensuring fair payment and transparency.

We prioritise cacao grown using regenerative, agroforestry methods that support biodiversity and don't involve deforestation. We aim to go 'beyond fair trade' through these direct partnerships.

While many of our farming partners use organic growing methods, we focus on direct relationships that often go beyond certification requirements. This allows us to work with smaller producers who may not have formal certifications but meet our standards for quality and sustainability.

Instead of farmers selling the raw material and getting much less, we source the end product to ensure farmers receive a fairer share of the value, and enable us to work closely with them on quality and sustainable practices.

By doing this, we showcase the best of Ecuadorian cacao and the people who make it possible.

Ecuador is renowned for its high-quality 'Nacional' cacao varieties, known for their complex floral and fruity flavour profiles ('Arriba' flavour). Recent archeological discoveries deemed Ecuador to be the historical birthplace of cacao.
